six point five

I think I have about 6.5 work days left. Very precise, I know. Left until what, you ask? Retirement.

I'm not sure what to make of all this yet. When people ask me how it feels (I've worked for the same company for 30+ years), I just shrug and say "surreal."

I'm a strange mixture of excited, terrified and realizing that there are actually some people that I will truly miss from work. Hopefully, I/we can manage to stay in touch. And yes, mom...I've been trying to set some of that up in advance. And I do aspire to see people in something other than a Teams/Zoon/WebEx/Meet situation. One of the things I've missed the most in the "pandemic era" is going out for happy hour with small groups of people. June 15th (California's alleged reopening) can't come soon enough.

One of my many things I'm interested in pursuing in retirement is writing...so we'll see if I can keep this up more than one entry per year(ish).

That's all I've got for a Sunday afternoon. I've got to ease into this. It might be time for a swim...or maybe a nap.

fresh madness

Hi.

This is where the writing goes, right?

It's been a while. There was a blog before (2005-2017ish). But it's gone now. This is a new thing.

I thought about keeping the old name (cause I liked it), but then I tried some other quasi-racing related names and this one stuck for me. Seven furlong races are some of my favorites to watch because they require both speed and stamina. The true sprinters often can't hack the extra 1/8th of a mile and the distance horses need to have enough speed to either get to the front early or come winging from the clouds in the stretch.

Enough racing talk...

Here we are...shelter in place day #497 (actually, I think it's about day 20ish for me). I lost count somewhere. This whole work from home thing, I've come to realize, it's not for me. While I am an introvert and would never be mistaken for a people person, I miss the interaction in the workplace. Thank goodness my team is very adept at working remote.

Anyway, what am I going to talk about here?

Let's see...

Horse racing (obviously)
Music
Movies
Books
The Outside World
Technology (maybe)
Data
Random internet things
Social media
Beer
Food
I might even try some fiction writing samples if I actually develop some

I read all the "how to blog" articles that tell you to focus your blog on one topic. Yeah, well...that's not for me. I'll probably stay away from religion and politics. Not my strengths.

Let's see how this goes. Feel free to comment with encouragement, badgering, corrections, writing tips, engagement, beer tips, questions, whatever...
